AI in Healthcare

Exploring the requirements to scale high-value AI to improve patient outcomes, expand access to care, and lower costs.

Adoption of artificial intelligence in healthcare is accelerating. The real question is not whether AI can improve healthcare, but whether it will. Without deliberate action, AI risks amplifying the inefficiencies and costs of today’s healthcare system. But under the right conditions, it can expand clinical capacity, improve outcomes, reduce spending, evolve workforce roles, and simplify administration.

The path forward requires coordinated action across multiple market and policy domains, including understanding what works, establishing rules for coverage and use, purchasing effectively, and redesigning care delivery. Among these levers, payment is foundational because it influences where investment flows, how evidence is generated, which technologies scale, and whether AI is directed toward more activity or better outcomes.

Workshop Series

PHTI convened a three-part workshop series in Washington, D.C., examining what it will take for AI to deliver: safe clinical applications in patient care, streamlined prior authorization and billing, and payment models that reward outcomes rather than activity.

To realize potential benefits of high-value AI in healthcare, stakeholders must address critical questions about evidence standards, performance monitoring, regulatory frameworks, payment and market incentives.

AI Taskforce

The PHTI AI Taskforce consists of leaders from a broad range of health systems, AI solution companies, and industry experts.

The PHTI AI Taskforce aims to drive thoughtful adoption of AI solutions to deliver efficiency gains for the U.S. healthcare system, sharing actionable insights based on the learnings of early adopters to help the industry navigate implementation, identify the best ways to track progress, and deliver impact.
